Your comments on ISO 9000 applies only to small and medium sized enterprises who find the requirements quite onerous.

Sridhar,
ISO 9001 requirements are applicable to companies/organizations large and small that choose to maintain an accredited company/organization. In fact the origins of all management systems are based on ISO 9001 – At my last count, TL 9000 QMS Requirements and Measurements had 100 adders to the base standard.

As stated by Dr. Samuel Prasad in the link http://www.iso-9001-checklist.co.uk/tutorial/4.2-documentation.htm ...the ISO 9001 documentation requirements are in black and the interpretations are in green.

Companies do not find ISO 9001 requirements “quite onerous”, people do!

Now I must say that no one would invite an auditor to come in and audit their process; no more than you would call on the IRS to audit your taxes. Understanding the requirements of the quality management system should be shared with the whole company if the employees are going to commit to the process.

Auditors are required to audit the system not the people. If an audit is not value-added then it was not performed correctly. If you had a bad experience with an inexperienced auditor I hope you will not write off the entire quality management system.

ISO standards have come a long way since 1984. If you haven’t had experience being audited look for some training in the QMS – if your company trains individuals to help with the internal audits volunteer to be on the team. Knowledge is power
